Ian Rush was born on 20 October 1961. #LFC bought teenage Welsh striker in 1980 and he rose to become their all-time top goalscorer! No attacker could replicate Rushie with his consistency and clinical finish. Happy birthday Ian!

  10. 𝐙𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐜: "I was born in Rosengard, a place where there was a lot of crime, and my childhood was completely rotten. My father was an alcoholic and my mother was a hard case. When they divorced, I was only 2 years old. There were times when I had nothing to eat, so I stole food, clothes, a bike to go to workouts. I was crazy about football, but I didn't have money to buy shoes or a ball. I played in the street, barefoot, and that allowed me to develop my skills. Today my name shines, but they'll never know all that I had to sacrifice, and how hard it was to reach the top." Respect for one of the best players of our generation, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Wally Williams was born a stone's throw from Anfield in 1928, and began supporting the Reds in the 1930s - when future Manchester United manager Matt Busby was one of the stars of the team. The Kop season ticket holder died earlier this week, at the age of 94. Wally's son, Colin Williams has paid tribute to his late dad, describing him as "a bit of a legend at Anfield". Colin said his dad loved to see the success the club had enjoyed in recent years, as well as the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s READ MORE:Incredible new footage of Anfield Road end next steps He told the ECHO: "His best memory of a vast amount of games was the European Cup final in 1977 in Rome and travelling by train over several days to get there." Wally will also be remembered by his five other children: Glenys, David, Ann, Ken and Sandra. Other Liverpool fans have taken to social media to share tributes to Wally. "Stanley Park" said: "My friends and I have sat/stood in front of Wally and Colin since the Kop was rebuilt from the old standing terrace. There can’t be many fans left now who used to watch Liverpool before the war, as Wally did. Sincere condolences to Colin and family. RIP Wally." Allan Bates said: "A privilege to have known him, a great man who loved this club, also a good friend who will be sadly missed amongst our community QGFC (Quarry Green Football Club, in Kirkby) and Quarry Green Club. RIP Wally Kop Legend. YNWA." Les Lawson, chair of the Merseyside branch of the LFC official supporters' club and a friend of Wally, said: "Wally used to sit in row 27 in block 104 of the Kop and was one of the great characters of the Reds' support. "Wally had to stop going during last season as he had problems with his legs but he continued to support the Reds with the same enthusiasm he always did. My thoughts are with Wally's family and friends at this sad time."

  18. https://www.goal.com/en/news/explained-why-welsh-teams-play-in-the-english-premier-league/5ch7uidrrtr41a9rcl7ov7ten Explained: Why Welsh teams play in the 'English' Premier League Goal has everything you need to know about why certain Welsh sides compete in the Premier League, which is consists of teams based in England Swansea and Cardiff City are participants of the English Football League, though they are Welsh-based clubs – so how does their participation in the Premier League, Championship and League One in England work? The likes of Scottish-based clubs play in their own league, same as Northern Ireland. Wales, it seems, are the only nation in which their sides participate in a cross-border league – and here's what you need to know about it. Swansea, along with Cardiff City, Newport County, Wrexham and Merthyr Town all play in the English Football League as when they were first formed, no Welsh football league had existed. And so, their only option was to join the English Football League – Cardiff doing so in 1920 and Swansea following suit in 1921 – and have been playing there ever since. Though a Welsh Premier League (also known as Cymru Premier) was formed in 1992, the above clubs wished to remain playing in the English football league pyramid. Cardiff City, Swansea and Newport all compete in the English football league system and are all allowed to compete in the FA Cup, an English tournament. They used to be under the administration of the Football Association of Wales up until 2012, though their disciplinary functions are now handled by the English FA. "All matters where the penalty can include sporting sanctions will be dealt with by the [English] FA, including doping and off-the-field issues," said an FAW representative in 2011. The likes of Wrexham and Merthyr Town, however, remain under the authority of the FAW. Welsh teams playing in the English Premier League are ultimately the exception and not the rule. Scottish teams still play in the Scottish Premiership, not the Premier League, and Northern Irish teams compete in the Northern Ireland Football League. Swansea and Cardiff City are the two Welsh clubs who have played in the top tier of English top-flight football most consistently, with the Bluebirds also the only non-English team to have won the FA Cup (in 1927). Their participation in the FA Cup final in 2008 led the English FA to ultimately allow Welsh clubs to represent England in UEFA competitions, such as the UEFA Cup, in the event that they won the final. They ended up losing to Portsmouth in the final, but FA's rule change still stood. Swansea's victory during the 2013 League Cup led them to become the first Welsh side to qualify for a European competition through the route of the English FA.
