10 things you need to remember about the departing Liverpool legend

Liverpool’s veteran centre-back will move to German club Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and we would like to wish him “onnea” (Finnish for good luck or congratulations). After a memorable decade at Anfield, we pick out the 10 significant things you need to remember about the tall, blonde defender …

 

1) On October 7, 1973, Sami Tuomas Hyypiä was born to footballing parents in Porvoo and raised in Voikkaa, 100 miles north-east of Finland’s capital Helsinki.

 

2) Though his father, Jouko, played for Finnish team Pallo Peikot, and his mother was an amateur goalkeeper, as a youth Sami played Ice Hockey. However, his folks stepped in and helped him choose his career, pointing him the direction of the beautiful game. He said: "I guess there was only one career option for me!"

 

3) Hyypiä started his career with Ykkonen side KuMu, where he played every position except the one he would end up excelling at – centre-back. He soon moved on to Veikkausliiga club MyPa, where he spent four years and helped them win the Finnish Cup in 1992 and 1995.

 

4) In 1995 Kevin Keegan, then manager of Newcastle United, gave Hyypiä – then 22 – a two-week trial. Though King Kev did not offer the 6’4” defender a contract, if certainly opened the youngster’s eyes, whet his footballing appetite and made him want to play in the Premier League.

 

“They certainly helped my career,” he said. “And it gave me an insight into English football. I was a young player in Finland and I didn't really expect it to lead to anything. I just went for the experience, but it was good experience and I enjoyed my time there. It helped me a lot at the time to see a big English club at close hand and I always look[ed] forward to going back."

 

5) It would be another four years before he would gain a full-time contract in the Premier League – in 1995 he transferred to Dutch side Willem II, where he played before his move to Liverpool. He became the team captain and helping them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

 

6) After moving to Liverpool, the team he supported as a child, in a deal worth £2.6 million, Hyypiä quickly established himself in the first team. He formed a formidable partnership with Swiss Stephane Henchoz. Within two years he was regularly skippering the side and he was named the Reds’ full-time captain in the 2001-02 season.

 

7) Though he lost the captaincy in 2003 to local boy Steven Gerrard, who has had the arm band ever since, he was crucial to the team when Liverpool came from 3-0 down to defeat AC Milan in the Champions League Final in 2005.

 

8) In April 2003 Hyypiä received a red card against Manchester United after only four minutes (United went on to win 4-0) – it is the only dismal of his career hitherto, and he will never forget it. "Ruud Van Nistelrooy was going through and maybe I took his shirt a little bit,” he confessed. “The referee thought so. I got a straight red card. They got a penalty. It was an agony to watch the game in the dressing room. The only red card of my career. You remember that sort of thing."

 

9) In all he has won 11 trophies – nine with Liverpool, including the Champions League, the Super Cup, the UEFA Cup, the FA Cup (twice), the League Cup (twice) and the Community Shield (twice).

 

10) On the international scene Hyypiä made his debut for Finland against Tunisia in November 1992, when he was 19-years old. He currently has 97 caps and five goals and is only three appearances behind Ari Hjelm, who is second in the all-time caps list behind Jari Litmanen (122).

Все пак се надявах да подпише договор за още една година,но уви,на човека явно още му се играе,никой неможе да го съди за решението му,все пак чест му прави че не избра друг английски отбор, а желаещи такива не липстваха.

Каквото и да се каже за престоя на финландеца на Анфийлд ще бъде малко,дал е адски много на клуба и се надявах да продължи да дава и да получи някакъв пост при нас,несъмнено Агер и Шкъртел се нуждаеха от неговия опит...

Централният защитник на Ливърпул Сами Хюпия се надява престоят му в германския Байер Леверкузен да бъде също толкова успешен както при „червените”.

 

Тази сутрин финландският национал премина медицински тестове в германския тим и сложи подписа си под предварителен договор за срок от две години. Хюпия напуска английския гранд след десет години на „Анфийлд”. Контрактът му с мърсисайдци изтича в края на сезона.

 

„Разговорите с Байер бяха много положителни. Накараха ме да почувствам, че съм наистина желан в отбора. Очаквам с нетърпение това предизвикателство и се надявам, че партньорството ни ще бъде успешно”, заяви Хюпия.

 

Леверкузен ще бъде едва петият отбор в дългогодишната кариера на финландеца. Преди да се присъедини към тима на Ливърпул през 1999 година, Хюпия защитава цветовете на родните си Пало-Пейкот, КуМу, МиПа, както и на холандския Вилем II.

Мениджърът на Ливърпул Рафаел Бенитес каза на Сами Хюпия, че вратата винаги ще бъде отворена, ако той реши да се завърне на „Анфийлд" в бъдеще. 35-годишният защитник избра да премине в Байер (Леверкузен) през лятото, за да удължи кариерата си.

 

Финландският национал, който има 97 мача за родината си, получи предложение да остане в Ливърпул, като резерва в първия отбор с нарастващи функции на треньор. Бенитес призна, че искал Хюпия да остане, но приема решението на централния защитник.

 

„Със Сами говорихме за бъдещето му и нашата идея беше да му предложим удължаване и след това ще има шанс да стане част от треньорския щаб. Той получи предложението с удоволствие, но все още има голямо доверие в себе си, физически е подготвен и искаше да премисли всички предложения, които получи.

 

Опитахме да го задържим и го искахме, защото той заслужава най-доброто. Той реши да напусне, но в бъдеще вратата винаги ще е отворена за него да се завърне по всяко време", заяви Бенитес пред „Телеграф".

 

Хюпия е част от Ливърпул от 1999 година, когато беше закупен срещу 2,5 милиона паунда от холандския Вилем ІІ. С екипа на „червените" финландецът има две купи на Англия, две купи на Лигата, Купа на УЕФА и Шампионска лига, отбелязвайки 33 гола в 454 мача.

Sami Hyypia today spoke exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv about the reasons behind his decision to bring a glittering ten-year Anfield career to an end - and you can now watch our interview for FREE online.

First of all Sami, there are many fans all over the world saddened at the news that you're leaving Liverpool. Why have you decided to move to Bayer Leverkusen?

 

The main reason is I still think I'm young enough to play football and I know chances to play here would be limited. I spoke to the manager and I didn't want him to make promises about how many games I would play, but this season has been mentally very difficult. I haven't played a lot and playing is what I enjoy most.

 

I understand it isn't possible to play enough games here for me to be happy, so I had to look elsewhere. I got the option to go abroad to Bayer Leverkusen. The whole package was good, they have big plans for me and hopefully I can go there and help them to be successful.

 

Even taking into account your reasons for leaving, was it still a difficult decision to make?

 

It was very difficult because from day one I have felt at home here. I have had good relationships with the club, with the staff and all the players who have been here over the last ten years. It's difficult to leave but my reasons are all professional. I still want to play football.

 

Ten years is a long time to spend at one club. My family are settled here and I know it will be stressful moving with them into a new house in a new country. But the professional side drove this decision. It's a new challenge and I will give it everything to be successful in Germany.

What did the manager say in your discussions with him?

 

He wished me good luck. We had a number of discussions and the possibility of a coaching role was mentioned, but I don't feel ready for that yet. I feel I still have a few more years in my legs to play football.

 

You've been here for a decade and so will leave with a lot of great memories from your time at the club...

 

Yes, we have had a lot of ups and downs during my time here but I have so many great memories and Liverpool will be my English club for ever.

 

What has been the highlight from your time at the club?

 

Obviously the Champions League victory was amazing. To be 3-0 down and still go on and win is something we'll never forget. On a more personal level my first game at Sheffield Wednesday, my first match at Anfield and my first goal for Liverpool are moments I will never forget.

How much will you miss the Liverpool fans, with whom you've had a great relationship over the years?

 

Obviously I'll miss them a lot and I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to them all. They still sing my name when I'm warming up or playing and that's always good to hear. It's sad to be leaving, but I'll be back one day to watch some games and maybe see them all again.

How much are you hoping for a chance to say goodbye to them on the last day of the season against Tottenham?

 

That's a decision for the manager to make. Even if I'm not involved in the game I will find a way to get onto the pitch at the end. If the Stadium Manager tries to stop me I'll run past him [laughs]. I am sure I will have an opportunity to say goodbye.

You mentioned you don't yet feel ready to be a coach - but is that a dream for the future and could we see you back at Liverpool in that capacity one day?

 

Yes, hopefully. Coaching is something which has always been in my mind, but I have to take my badges first. At the end of my playing career I will look to take the badges and then see. I would like to come back here one day as a coach.

This club will always be in your heart, won't it?

Yes, always.
