CARRA: I'LL GET BACK TO MY BEST FORM

Paul Hassall 08 October 2009

Jamie Carragher has vowed to return to his defensive best after enduring a difficult start to the 2009-10 campaign.

The Reds vice-captain admits he has struggled to hit peak form so far this season but insists it won't be long before both he, and the Liverpool rearguard, are back amongst the shut-outs.

"We aren't playing well as a back four and I'm not playing well personally," Carragher told Liverpoolfc.tv. "I need to hit better form and hopefully that will come in the next few games.

"Over the last five or six years we have been renowned as a team who have kept a lot of clean sheets and for keeping it tight. I think that's why we get a bit more criticism because people don't expect it of Liverpool - and rightly so.

"We take the plaudits when things are going well so you have to take the criticism when it's not going well.

"I know I need to improve myself and we also need to improve as a team."

Rafael Benitez's men head into the international break knowing that no de has won the title after losing three of their first eight league games since Manchester United in 1967.

Carragher accepts Liverpool's start has made the quest for title number 19 more difficult, but points to another statistic as reason for optimism.

"You can shape statistics to make them look however you want them to," he said. "We've now got the same points as Manchester United had at this point last season. That's another statistic you could look at because they went on to win the league with 90-odd points.

"Whatever statistic you throw at us, we know we haven't made a good start. We don't need to look at them because we know ourselves that we haven't performed as well as we would have liked in certain games. We now have to put that right.

"Points are what matter and how many you end up with at the end of the season. We've lost six games in our previous two Premier League seasons.

"To lose that many in 76 games - that's some achievement and yet we still haven't won the league. Man United have lost more than us and won the league for the past two years.

"So as far as we are concerned it's now all about getting points on the board."

http://s.novsport.com/content/pics/147068.jpg

http://gong.bg/uploads/news_images/200911/photo_verybig_104339.jpg

FIFA.com.

http://s.novsport.com/content/pics/184795.jpg

AT lunchtime on Saturday, Jamie Carragher is scheduled to play his 600th game for Liverpool at Portsmouth. Sportsmail's Andy Townsend and four of Anfield's big names pay tribute to the remarkable one-club defender who has lived and breathed Liverpool since he was nine years old.

RAFA BENITEZ : TO BE at one club for such a long time and to play 600 games is absolutely amazing and shows the passion and commitment.

'Before I came here, I watched a lot of games and was analysing the players, and Carra always stood out. You could see he was a clever player.

'He wanted to be a central defender and he was keen to learn; you can see that he has improved and improved every single year. He is a top professional.

'That is the difference between him and other players. Some have different qualities but he analyses, he reads the games well and he can adapt to different situations.

'It can be difficult for defenders to get recognition. For strikers and midfielders, it is easy because everyone can see their goals. With defenders, you tend to see only own goals and mistakes getting highlighted.

'But, during the time I have been here, Carra has done really well. He is one of the best defenders in England.'

STEVE McMANAMAN: MY FIRST real memory of Carra was in the team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1996. He was a great character. With that voice you could hear him a mile away. It was extra special for me and Robbie Fowler to see him come through as it was another good young local lad.

'Over my period in the team, he must have played in four or five different positions but his attitude was impeccable.

He was always eager to learn but, equally, Carra was never afraid to mix it with the older lads and he would put himself about in training - people always talk about his tackling. 'To get to 600 games in this day and age is an outstanding achievement; it shows how well he has looked after himself and why he has been at the top of his profession for such a long time - that he can still play three times a week is a testament to his ability.'

DIDI HAMANN: 'HE'S a fearsome competitor, and was always a hard worker from a young age. There were other players blessed with more talent and Jamie had to work for it. Although he started in the first team at 18 or 19 it's amazing that he's reached 600 games.

'When I went to the club he was playing right back, left back, centre midfield, anywhere he could get a game.

'After Rafael Benitez took over he transformed Jamie into one of the best centre backs in the Premier League. Benitez took his game to another level, and there haven't been too many better centre halves in England during his career.

'You soon realised how much the club meant to him.'

IAN RUSH

'WHEN I was coaching the strikers at the club under Gerard Houllier, I used to see Carra. He's a great basic defender who doesn't do any fancy stuff. His commitment is second to none.

'You don't get many defenders idolised by Liverpool supporters but he is. He'll throw his body in anywhere to stop the opposition and, if the ball needs to go into the stands, he'll put it in the stands.

'There's just so many defenders in the Premier League who cannot defend. They have plenty of skill on the ball but they cannot defend.

'Carragher's one of the oldfashioned ones. You need a mixture of both. Don't forget, he started out as a striker at Liverpool!

'But the move from right back to central defence a few years ago was great for him. At centre back, he is fantastic. He's one of the greatest defenders Liverpool have ever had.'

ANDY TOWNSEND

'HE made his full debut against Aston Villa when I was there and I think the impression he made on me is best described as a vicious assault!

'He walloped me six feet up in the air in a game Liverpool won 3-0 at Anfield. What you always recognised when you played against him was that he was a genuine competitor. If you conjure an image of him it is not of someone gliding along majestically, it is of someone with his hands on his hips gasping for his last breath and then lunging into a tackle to deny a goalscoring opportunity.

'He has not been the most cultured or skilful centre half, far from it, but in terms of effort there have been very few as giving as him.

'But Carragher is as good a club player as you will find and I have long admired his attitude.

'He has lived the dream for many Liverpool lads, and he deserves all the credit he gets.'

http://s.novsport.com/content/pics/184993.jpg

http://img1.sportal.bg/uploads/news/2009_52/images/00211917.jpg

One of the big themes in this column over the past few weeks has been responsibility. Or lack of it.

It was Sir Alex Ferguson who so eloquently said recently that players these days are sheltered from taking any responsibility for their actions any more, or their failings. They just don't hold their hands up and accept responsibility.

Well, I have to practice what I preach, because if I'm to criticise players for not holding their hands up, then I have to do the same when I make a mistake. So here goes.

My report following Liverpool's defeat by Arsenal singled out Jamie Carragher for criticism for the goal which let the Gunners back in the game, and eventually led to what has been a massively damaging defeat for the Anfield side.

It was only when I was able to watch the highlights the next day that I realise Carra hadn't made a mistake after all. Glen Johnson turned a cross into his own net because he was surprised when his fellow defender missed it. But Carragher only missed it because the ball took a wicked deflection.

Sitting in the press box in the heat of the action without the aid of a TV replay, I didn't spot that, so it was my mistake, and I'll hold my hands up.

Carragher was blamed unfairly, and in fact, if anything, it should have been the full-back Fabio Aurelio who took responsibility along with Johnson for both goals, because he twice deserted his position at crucial times.

I'd go further. To me, in recent weeks, it seems that Carra is one of the few players in the Liverpool team taking any responsibility for anything. He may have made a few mistakes this season, but at least he CARES. At least he's trying.

Against Portsmouth at the weekend, he was the only one with any real passion in the Liverpool team. He seemed one of the few who weren't resigned to defeat from virtually the opening minutes. And that is a sad indictment of this current Liverpool.

They are a squad stuffed full of stars, with players from all over the globe who will be good enough to go to the World Cup finals in the summer. But how many of them care about Liverpool, about the fans and what the club means?

How many of them are prepared to take responsibility for the position the club finds itself in, to stand up and be counted, and put in the performances that will turn Liverpool's season around?

Carragher will. There has been more than the odd suggestion in recent months that the defender doesn't always see eye to eye with his manager Rafa Benitez. There has even been the odd suggestion that the Liverpool boss would prefer a centre-half pairing of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel.

But that won't happen in the near future, for one very good reason, and that is Benitez knows he can't do without Carra. He knows that the defender is a player who will give everything for his club, whether he gets on with the manager or not.

In fact, I'll bet any money that Benitez wishes he had a few more in his side like Carragher, who will go out and take responsibility for their performances, and the position of their club, and that includes those players that are supposed to be close to the manager.

Right now, Liverpool need all their players to have the same attitude, to go out and fight for the club - and the fans - who pay their massive wages, and show some pride in the Liverpool shirt, and what it stands for.

I'll carry on criticising Carragher if he deserves it, and I know that he'll take it on the chin, because he's the first to hold his hands up. But he deserves some praise too, right now, for taking responsibility where those around him are not.

Carra hails record-breaker

Jamie Carragher has hailed goalscoring genius Fernando Torres after Liverpool's number nine sunk Aston Villa with a last minute winner in the Reds final game of the Noughties.

http://assets1.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/assets/torresvilla263x268.jpg

El Nino also smashed a club record for the quickest Red to reach 50 league goals. The Spanish ace has taken just 72 top-flight games to reach 50 and the Reds No.23 believes it is a special feat.

"Fernando is a great player, a world-class striker, and to beat people like Ian Rush, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Roger Hunt to 50 league goals says it all about him really," said Carragher.

"To be top of that list shows what a great player he is and that's why we paid the money for him."

The late win at Villa Park ensured the Reds ended the Noughties just four points behind fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur and Bootle's finest insists this was a crucial win.

"It's a big result for us and it puts us a lot closer to Aston Villa," he said.

"One game can make a difference. If we would have lost this game people would have written us off in the race for the top-four so we have given ourselves a fighting chance.

"Aston Villa have been up there in the last few years alongside Everton but now Manchester City are up there and Tottenham are doing really well.

"There's a lot of teams up there all looking all trying to finish in the top-four. It was a lot more than just the three points tonight and we have showed we are still fighting for it.

"I haven't looked at the table for a while but this was an important win for us, and if we can beat Tottenham in our next league that will put us right up there.

"To get a last minute winner is always great and you could see at the end just what that result meant to our supporters and the players. We have had our ups and downs this season and hopefully we can go on a good run now.

"We knew how important this game was. Villa have been on a great run. They are a top team with good players and a top manager and it's always difficult to come here. There wasn't too many chances in the game but to get the win was a great result."

The highlight of my season so far - by some distance - was the sight of Jamie Carragher standing over Philipp Degen when his team-mate went down injured towards the end of the game against Spurs.

In what was a rather extensive sequence of writhing and groaning, the Swiss defender took an eternity to come to his senses, causing an extended break in proceedings.

Given that Liverpool were leading at the time, you would expect most players on his team to forgive such obvious amateur dramatics, but not our hero Carra.

If ever there is a player who sums up the more admirable qualities of British professional football; the desire, the will to win and the sheer straight-forward, uncompromising honesty of - an admittedly diminishing band - of players in our game, then it is he.

And he didn't disappoint. Degen may have been playing for time, but Carragher didn't appreciate the potential to the break in concentration it would bring, nor the prospect of leaving Liverpool short for any time, as the defender would be forced off the pitch.

So standing over him, face just a little contorted, you could hear him issue a rather blunt instruction, along the lines of "get up you ****.

Then, as the Reds physio tried to come on to admister some treatement, he turned to the Liverpool bench and bellowed: "There nothing ******* wrong with him."

You could hear all that clearly from half way up the main stand, even above the noise of an Anfield crowd that had been passionate and vocal all night.

And it told you that Carragher shares the passion and commitment of the club's, so desperate was he to protect his side's lead in what was potentially a defining game in Liverpool's season.

Now I know the cynical amongst you will no doubt dig up plenty of examples when Carra has been less than straight in games, when he has cheated or fouled, though I'm not sure many will find evidence of him trying to con a referee.

Me, I'd prefer to savour the moment - alongside the time in the first half when he burst down the right flank in an apparently futile chase of the lost cause of a ball heading for a goal kick, only to somehow win the impossible race.

That roused the fans and set the tone for the night, and I'd like to think Carra's comments to his Swiss mate later on added the final word on what could be an important night for the club.

It says that amid a season where too many Liverpool players have seemed embarrassingly indifferent to the inadequacy of their performances, at least one player cares. Passionately.
