Carragher has no navel due to having been born with gastroschisis.

Liverpool's Jamie Carragher wants Europa League place

Liverpool's Jamie Carragher has said he is in no doubt about the value of qualifying for the Europa League.

The Reds occupy the final European spot with debate on Merseyside centring on whether a Europa League campaign will help or hinder progress next season.

But the veteran defender told BBC Radio Merseyside: "There's a lot of talk from other people about wanting fifth place or not but I'm desperate to get it.

"Liverpool and European football is what the club's about."

The Reds have taken 29 league points from a possible 39 since Kenny Dalglish took over as manager from Roy Hodgson in January.

Carragher says he would like their hard work to to end with the highest league position possible and the place in Europe that would bring.

The 33-year-old continued: "If we keep winning games, we have a good chance of getting it.

"Tottenham will probably feel the same and I think it will be a great game when they come here. Also, if we get in, it means we keep winning and the feel-good factor continues.

"We haven't had a great 18 months but now we can start enjoying ourselves and actually go into games expecting to win."

After starting in Sunday's 3-0 win over Newcastle, the former England international is now joint second on the club's all-time appearances list on 665 games.

He currently sits alongside club legends Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence and if he takes the field against Fulham at the weekend, he will move into clear second, with only Ian Callaghan ahead of him on 857.

"Just to be around all these people is a great honour for me," Carragher continued.

"The people I've gone past like Ian Rush and Tommy Smith - these are all people I look up to and for me they are what Liverpool is about. They are the legends of the club and always will be.

"It's something I can look back on at the end of my career. Now I want to look forward and get more appearances and hopefully the club can still do well and win more trophies before I finish."

Why Carra means so much to Liverpool and our game as one-club men become a dying breed

By David Maddock

When Jamie Carragher leads Liverpool out at Fulham next Monday night, he will become the club’s second longest-serving player of all time.

If you are travelling to the game, you could do worse than take a little time out to acknowledge the achievement of this incredible Anfield character - because you may never see his like again.

In these days of football high-finance, the one-club player is becoming so rare, he will soon be an extinct species.

The reasons are simple. Unless you happen to come through the youth structure of one of the big three or four clubs in the Premier League, then if you have talent, you will almost inevitably move on.

And with the ever-increasing need for instant success at those three or four clubs, the prospects of actually coming through the system there is more and more remote.

It is a fairly basic calculation. Can you afford the time to develop talent, when the instant fix of signing an already-established international is so much easier and so much less of a risk?

It has had a crushing effect on our game - as the progress of young talent at some of our biggest clubs illustrates.

Carragher and Steven Gerrard are the last two players to come through the youth structure at Anfield and establish themselves at the very top level of the game. That is a sobering thought.

Carra made his debut in 1996, Gerrard in 1998. Since then, a succession of players have graduated to the first team, but none – yet – has established himself in the side.

It is the same story at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge. Manchester United have Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes of course, but they arrived on the scene even before Carragher. Wes Brown is the last truly established first teamer to have come through the ranks there, and he made his debut in 1998.

Likewise, at Chelsea, John Terry was the last to become a true regular, and he also made his debut in 1998 (and technically was a product of the West Ham youth system).

So it is almost 13 years since our – arguably – three biggest clubs have produced a player who has gone on to establish himself long term at the summit of the game.

Even worse, that drought arrived immediately on the back of a golden age at Old Trafford and Anfield, when the likes of Fowler, McManaman, Beckham and the Nevilles were produced on an almost yearly basis.

It is a worrying situation and one that could have massive repercussions for the future of our game, and perhaps for the big clubs themselves.

Arsenal and Manchester City are a little different of course, but with the demands ever greater and the focus changing at both those clubs because of the high finance, it will undoubtedly be harder and harder to break through at those clubs, too.

Yet Giggs at United and Carragher at Liverpool have shown the value of having players in the side who understand the history, tradition and character of a club.

United stand on the verge of a Premier League and Champions League double this season, and it is no exaggeration to suggest they wouldn’t be there without Giggs.

They are an incredibly young squad, which is why they have been so inconsistent this season, and yet thanks to the experience of Giggs and Scholes, Van der Sar and Ferdinand, they still stand on the verge of history.

Liverpool have not quite reached those heights, but where would they have been without Carra?

For me, he has been the outstanding central defender in the Premier League over the past decade, and certainly his club’s most consistent performer.

What is amazing is that he has rarely been fully appreciated by his own fans, and has sometimes even been the focus for suspicion and criticism, because of the often-political state of the club.

It is a shame his reputation has been diminished like that, because he deserves to rank up there alongside Anfield greats such as Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, Ian Rush and Tommy Smith, as well as his current boss, the greatest of them all, Kenny Dalglish.

He is THAT good, and that dedicated to his club and to his profession.

At risk of going overboard here, like Giggs he is an almost unique figure, and one that football fans from EVERY club should treasure, because there won’t be many more like him coming along.

So, if you are at Craven Cottage on Monday, just think for a second about the man who will once again stand resolute at the heart of his side, and what he stands for.

And then cheer your heart out for Jamie Carragher, because he is a true Anfield legend

10 games that made our No.23

http://assets1.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/carra6732168673267321_4c864b90b7976894311209.jpg

After Jamie Carragher went joint-second in our all-time appearance list on Sunday, Liverpoolfc.tv takes a look at the 10 games that have defined the Bootle boy's career to date.

Carra chalked up his 665th Reds run out against Newcastle United, tying him with Anfield legends Ray Clemence and Emlyn Hughes - though he still has some way to go if he is to surpass Ian Callaghan's astonishing record of 857 appearances for the club.

In tribute to the No.23's achievement, we cast a look back over the 10 matches that have helped establish the 33-year-old as one of the finest centre-backs in world football.

As ever, let us know what you think of our choices by leaving a comment in the box at the foot of this article.

Middlesbrough v Liverpool

League Cup fifth round, January 1997

Liverpool might have crashed out of the League Cup at the Riverside Stadium, but Carragher's substitute appearance gave Reds fans a glimpse of the future.

Replacing Rob Jones with 15 minutes remaining, the defender's versatility was immediately apparent as he slotted into the right-back position.

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Premier League, January 1997

Goals from Carragher have been at a premium since he made his debut over 14 years ago - but he didn't have long to wait for his first. Just 10 days after making his debut, he marked his first start with a goal in front of the Kop.

Carragher was initially pencilled in to play in defence by then manager Roy Evans after Bjorn Tore Kvarme's international clearance didn't arrive in time. However, Carra was asked to display his versatility again after he was selected to play in midfield due to a late illness to Patrik Berger.

Had it not been for the late switch, he may never have come forward for the set-piece he scored from, but Carragher rose highest from a Stig-Inge Bjornebye corner to head home. This after a fairytale debut began with a yellow card just 20 seconds in!

Liverpool v Manchester United

Premier League, September 1999

On a day to forget for the Reds, Carragher scored two own goals to give fierce rivals Manchester United a 3-2 victory at Anfield.

Goals from Sami Hyypia and Patrik Berger were not enough to overcome Alex Ferguson's men. Andy Cole netted with a header, but it was Carragher who grabbed the headlines with an unfortunate brace at the wrong end.

Liverpool v Birmingham

League Cup final, February 2001

http://assets.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/72522312.jpg

The first piece of silverware picked up in the famous treble season of 2001 was a League Cup win at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff - a venue the Reds would go on to frequent regularly.

Gerard Houllier's men went into the game as heavy favourites against the division one outfit, and a beautifully-struck Robbie Fowler effort gave them the lead on the half-hour mark. A stoppage-time penalty from Darren Purse took the game to extra-time, which led to penalties.

With the shootout level at 4-4, Carragher coolly placed his spot-kick high to 'keeper Ian Bennett's left - and Andy Johnson missed the following penalty to give Liverpool their first trophy since 1995.

Barcelona v Liverpool

UEFA Cup semi-final, April 2001

http://assets.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/944482.jpg

Gerard's Houllier's men were the underdogs going into the Nou Camp with Barcelona boasting such attacking talents as Patrick Kluivert, Xavi and the peerless Rivaldo.

With a clear game-plan to try and contain, Carragher was one of the standout players in a performance which put him on the path to becoming a defender of world class.

Yet again showing his versatility, Carra played the game, and the majority of the season in fact, at left-back and earned plaudits from fans and pundits alike for his performances.

The 0-0 draw went a long way to securing a passage through to the UEFA Cup final, as the Reds beat Barca 1-0 at Anfield in the return leg.

Liverpool v Chelsea

Champions League semi-final, May 2005

Rafa Benitez's side had already overcome Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen on the road to Istanbul, and Carragher was firmly established as one of the finest defenders in Europe when Champions-elect Chelsea came to town.

In a game that is now legendary, Luis Garcia's goal after just four minutes was enough to send Liverpool to their first European Cup final in 20 years.

As Jose Mourinho's men pressed for the strike that would take them through on away goals, Carragher and co. stood firm to add another celebrated chapter to the history books. The scenes after the final whistle will live long in the memory of every fan.

Liverpool v AC Milan

Champions League final, May 2005

http://assets.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/52980378_4dc12bbcd19d8381132723.jpg

Just three weeks later, Liverpool went to the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul to play AC Milan, in the greatest European Cup final of all time.

The Reds' game-plan was undone after just a minute when Paolo Maldini turned home Andrea Pirlo's free-kick. Hernan Crespo then added a brace to give Carlo Ancelotti's men a seemingly unassailable lead at half-time.

But, in an astonishing six-minute comeback, goals from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso restored parity. In a display that was nothing short of heroic, Carra battled on through extra-time with severe cramp with a will to win that was indefatigable.

Carra even advised goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek to 'do a Brucie' - in reference to Bruce Grobbelaar's 'spaghetti legs' in the 1984 European Cup final win over Roma - when facing Milan's penalties. The Reds claimed their fifth European Cup with a 3-2 shootout win in one of the most famous nights in the club's illustrious history.

Liverpool v CSKA Moscow

European Super Cup, August 2005

Liverpool headed to the principality of Monaco as Champions of Europe to face UEFA Cup holders CSKA Moscow in the traditional European curtain-raiser.

With Steven Gerrard absent, Carragher captained the side to a 3-1 win to lift the trophy as stand-in skipper.

The Reds fell a goal down to Daniel Carvalho's effort just before the half-hour mark before substitute Djibril Cisse grabbed an equaliser eight minutes from the end to take the game to extra-time. The Frenchman then grabbed a second after 102 minutes, before setting up Luis Garcia seven minutes later.

Liverpool v Chelsea

Champions League semi-final, May 2007

Just two years after beating Chelsea in the 2005 semi-final, the same opposition stood between Liverpool and a second final in three years.

With Jose Mourinho's men leading 1-0 from the first leg, Daniel Agger swept home Steven Gerrard's cleverly disguised free-kick after 22 minutes to even the tie.

A defence superbly marshalled by a colossal Carragher kept out the attacking talents of Didier Drogba, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard to send the tie beyond extra-time and into penalties. The Reds beat Chelsea 4-1 on spot-kicks to book a date in the final with AC Milan in Athens.

Liverpool v Luton

FA Cup third round replay, January 2008

http://assets.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/080115-014-liverpool_luton.jpg

In the game that marked Carragher's 500th appearance in a Liverpool shirt, a guard of honour was formed before kick-off for the defender.

Taking to the pitch with his son James, Carragher was warmly applauded by both sets of fans, and he was made captain for the game by manager Rafa Benitez. A Steven Gerrard hat-trick and strikes from Sami Hyypia and Ryan Babel saw off Luton, as the Reds cruised to a 5-0 win.

Community honour for Carra

Jamie Carragher was honoured for his outstanding charity work in the city by being named Philanthropist of the Year at a glittering ceremony last night.

The Liverpool vice-captain was recognised in the Spirit of Merseyside Awards hosted by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, at the Philharmonic Hall.

Cathy Elliott, of the Community Foundation, said: "In difficult economic times, this evening has proven that our communities are strong and that philanthropy is thriving in Merseyside."

Carragher is the epitome of what supporters love to see on the pitch - a local lad from Bootle who knows just how much Liverpool Football Club means to the people who pay to watch games.

The proud Bootle boy decided, as a way of saying thank you to the people of Merseyside and all Liverpool Football Club Supporters, to set up the '23 Foundation' to "help give local kids a chance."

The 23 Foundation has helped many local charities in Liverpool and continues to go from strength to strength.

Fear of failure undermines England, says Jamie Carragher

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/53717000/jpg/_53717255_carragher464.jpg

Jamie Carragher has admitted there is a fear factor playing for England.

"One mistake and you could be absolutely slaughtered," the Liverpool defender told BBC Radio 5 live.

"At your club, you know you will not be criticised as much and perhaps three days later there will be another game.

"With England, it could be months before you have another fixture. There is a fear at times when playing for England."

Carragher, speaking a year after England's elimination from the World Cup, said players sometimes buckled under the media scrutiny.

"The intensity of the press does get to the players," said the 33-year-old. "Sometimes I think players would prefer the press guy to think they had played well, rather than the manager."

England were knocked out of the World Cup in South Africa by Germany, beaten 4-1 in the second round.

Carragher played in the group games against the United States and Algeria after coming out of international retirement but was on the bench for the defeat by the Germans.

In a BBC Radio 5 live documentary, to be broadcast on Tuesday at 1930 BST, Carragher appeared to criticise England's set-up in South Africa, arguing that players were bored.

"You stay in a hotel all day but you are at a World Cup for a long time and should be able to experience different things," he said.

"I wouldn't want players holed up. Take away the boredom, embrace the country we are in more. You never see anything."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp echoed Carragher's sentiments.

"I spoke to a few players who said they were sat in their rooms waiting for the day to pass," said the Spurs boss. "Some said they were bored out of their brains."

Redknapp also argued that many Premier League footballers now prioritise club football over representing their country.

"The rewards, the money that is involved in club football and the desire to play in the Champions League - it seems the international game is almost taking second stage," he said. "Players are loved by their clubs but not always when they play for their country."

England won only one of their four games in South Africa, recording a 1-0 victory over Slovenia in their final Group C match, and were widely criticised for their poor performances.

Coach Fabio Capello remains in charge and has started to place more faith in youngsters like Jack Wilshere and Adam Johnson.

Former German international and coach Franz Beckenbauer believes Capello should place more trust in his younger players.

"I like Fabio but maybe he still holds on to older players," said Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as a player and as a coach.

"Maybe he should be brave and bring on more youngsters. England always has a lot of youngsters."

http://img3.sportal.bg/uploads/news/2011_26/images/00312494.jpg

Carra: The right way forward

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool's philosophy of investing in exciting young talent can pay rich dividends in the future.

http://assets2.liverpoolfc.tv/uploads/copy_of_105475442.jpg

The Reds have already moved to secure the services of 21-year-old Jordan Henderson this summer as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for honours for years to come.

It's a policy Carragher is in full agreement with.

"The club now has a policy of focusing attention on young players and I think that's the right way for clubs to go," he said.

"You want to develop a team and have players at the club for a long time. I think that approach will really benefit us.

"Things don't always work out, but it's much easier to move on a younger player who still has a decent sell-on value than someone in their 30s."

Liverpool moved quickly to secure Henderson's signature from Sunderland in early June.

The midfielder impressed at the Stadium of Light last term, leading to international recognition with England, and Carragher can't wait to see him don the red jersey.

The vice-skipper added: "Jordan is a great signing. I know one of the coaches at Sunderland who rates Jordan very highly.

"He had a great season with Sunderland and we're fortunate to have got him. I think he will add real energy to our midfield."

Henderson is Liverpool's only signing so far this summer - but Carragher is confident there will be more new faces in the Reds' squad by the time they kick-off the 2011-12 Barclays Premier League season against Sunderland on August 13.

"It's still very early and I didn't expect too much to happen on the transfer front before now," said Carra.

"Over the summer players, managers, chief executives and owners are all away on holiday.

"It's only the start of July and with pre-season getting going next week I'm sure things will soon start moving.

"You often find that one deal sets it off and everything happens from there.

"I'm sure it will kick off over the next few weeks and hopefully we'll get a couple more new faces in."

Carra won't get complacent

Jamie Carragher accepts that he can no longer take his position in the Liverpool side for granted.

The 33-year-old centre-half slipped up in his last outing for the club, making the error which allowed Bolton to breach Liverpool's defence in an otherwise comfortable 3-1 win.

Liverpool have since signed promising young defender Sebastian Coates, and the club's vice-captain admits he is looking over his shoulder at the next generation queuing up for his place

"Young players at the club say, 'I have to be like Carra in training' because they can see that I put in a shift in every session," Carragher told The Times.

"But why should I rest on my laurels just because I have been in the top flight for so long?

"I am always looking to up my game because I feel that I still have something to prove. Even today some Liverpool fans are asking questions about my age and how long I will last.

"You could call it obsessive, but I have always agonised over my errors. My face hit the floor when the slip-up happened."

Jamie Carragher on his error against Bolton Quotes of the week

Coates

"The club has just signed a new centre-back who will be knocking at the door. There is no room for complacency."

And the former England international is still hurting from the error against the Trotters, despite the fact it had no bearing on the result of the Anfield win.

Carragher added: "You could call it obsessive, but I have always agonised over my errors. My face hit the floor when the slip-up happened."

Meanwhile, Carragher, who turns 34 in January, still has two years remaining on his contract but has hinted that he may call it a day if the club decline the opportunity to extend it.

He said: "My contract is up for renewal in two years, but I would not want to play for any other club.

"Life is not just about money. There are other things, important things that have a different kind of value. Anyone from Liverpool could tell you that."
