So no doubt everyone has heard about Liverpool Football Club's newest addition; Jordan Henderson. It was announced on Wednesday 8 June 2011 that a fee has been agreed between Sunderland and Liverpool. This is speculated to be Ј13m + David Ngog who is valued at Ј7m. For anyone still doubting Damien Comolli or our new owners should allay their fears because not only did this signing come out of the blue, but we also shifted an underperforming player at a profit bearing testament to the Liverpool Way of old. But this is a profile on Henderson so let's look at the bio and stats the newest member of the LFC family.

 

Jordan Henderson is a 20 year old midfielder who came through the ranks of the Sunderland academy. In 2009 Jordan went on a 6-month long loan spell at Coventry City where he made 10 appearances and scored a single goal, which was his first ever senior level goal, against Norwich City. His loan ended prematurely when he fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot.

 

In the 09/10 season Jordan broke into the Sunderland first team making 33 appearances in total. His first Sunderland goal came against Birmingham in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup. He continued to make strides and scored his first goal against Manchester City on the 19th of December 2009. He went on to win Sunderland Young Player of the Year for that season, totalling 2 goals and 6 assists in all competitions.

Jordan's 2010/11 season was very impressive, as seen above, for a 20 year old player and he got 3 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League with one goal against West Ham and two against Wigan Athletic. He also earned a spot on FIFA's list of 13 young players to watch and won the Sunderland Young player of the year once again. He made an impressive 37 starts for Sunderland and wasn't a substitute even once. While his shots on goal aren't that many but the amount of passes he made is simply amazing. With 1403 passes, including crosses and throw-ins, attempted and 1334 of them accurate he achieved a pass completion percentage of 74%. As a reward for all of his hard work, Jordan got called up to the English senior squad for the friendly against France on 17 November 2010 and played alongside Steven Gerrard in the midfield. He is also called up for the U21 England squad for the U21 Euro Championship taking place in Denmark.

The chalkboard above represents the passes Henderson made during our match against Sunderland in March. This gives us a taste of what we can expect from him in the future. He attempted a total 55 passes with only 8 of them not reaching their intended target and the vast majority of them being in the opposition's half. You can also see that even though Henderson started to the right of midfield he got around the pitch pretty well. It is also apparent that he is a pretty good crosser of the ball and can provide good service into the box for Carrol, but is also able to give pinpoint passes for Suarez.

 

In Sunderland's 3-0 victory over West Ham in May, Henderson got his 4th assist in extra time, laying the ball off for Riveros the finish. As seen below, Henderson attempted another 67 passes with 11 of them not reaching their target and one being the assist. He also made a number of long passes, showing his knack for crossing and giving through balls.

As we can see from both the analyses above, Henderson's performances in both a win and a loss are pretty consistent, though there were matches where his input was less due to the rest of his team performing better. This is no bad thing as it only means that the team relied less on his performance to get them through. In both situations, it has to be said; he handled himself and the pressure pretty well.

 

Even though all of his stats are already impressive, I only expect them to get better under King Kenny and co, as he was unfairly asked to carry Sunderland on many occasions. After all, the lad is only 20 and has a lot of growing and maturing still to do. I hope we, as the fans, give him a fair chance to prove himself to us and I'm sure he will become a Kop hero very soon. In the meantime we have to be content with watching him perform in the U21 Euro Champs. I'm sure everybody is anxious for more signings and also for the start of next season

Following his move to Liverpool, the photo of a young Jordan Henderson sitting on the shoulders of Ryan Giggs during a family holiday may need to be hidden from view in the Henderson household.

 

(Maybe his assertion that he styled his off-field persona on the Manchester United winger’s may need retrospective erasure too?)

 

Thankfully for many Liverpool fans the way Jordan Henderson conducts himself is more impressive than his choice of role model.

 

In the interviews after the 20-year old had put pen to paper on a long-term deal, both Damien Comolli and Kenny Dalglish emphasised the personal attributes that stand Henderson in good stead for the future.

 

For many fans, transfer rationale can be distilled into two criteria -money and footballing ability- but researching a target’s off-field personality is hugely important. Everyone Dalglish and Comolli spoke to regarding Henderson gave a glowing account.

 

In his own words, Henderson is ”a bit boring”. He does not smoke or embrace a footballer’s love of expensive luxuries and on the rare occasions that he goes out with friends, he drinks fruit juice. The England Under 21 international is a manager’s dream.

 

Although Henderson’s price tag has been questioned by some, Liverpool have acquired a player who will give everything to repay Dalglish’s faith.

 

Darren Bent said of Henderson, ”When someone tells him he can’t do something or that he’s not good enough, it’s straight on to the training ground to prove them wrong”.

 

Henderson has Premier League experience under his belt but he arrives at Anfield as a ‘work in progress’ and though it’s understandable that everyone is looking forward to seeing him in a Red shirt, it’s vital he’s judged for what he is: a developing young player.

 

Combining Henderson’s desire to learn with the opportunity to learn from one of the finest central midfielders of the Premier League era will only result in good things for Liverpool.

 

Henderson will be the first to admit that he suffered a loss of form midway through the season but Liverpool have spent heavily primarily due to Henderson’s potential. As Dalglish said (with regard to Andy Carroll), this is very much a signing for the long-term.

 

If critics are keen to burden Henderson with the weight of a price-tag, he will not be the last young British player to move clubs for an inflated fee. British players have been transferred for larger fees than the European equivalent for years now and the homegrown regulations will do nothing but exacerbate this.

 

Signing good young players has always represented shrewd business (both commercially and for footballing reasons), but the bright young things of English football are rapidly becoming key targets for top Premier League clubs as they seek to satisfy the impending mandatory quota.

 

It’s understandable that many fans bemoan this inflated sub-market but Liverpudlians can assuage their concerns over the size of the fee with the thought that Henderson has the ability to thrive in Liverpool’s midfield for more than a decade.

 

Henderson first came to my attention in Sunderland’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in October 2009. Although his side were unfortunate to leave Manchester with only a point, there was something about Henderson that caught the eye.

 

He was comfortable on the ball, showed an ability to beat his man and his positional awareness was impressive. It was far from a headline-stealing contribution, but it was enough to convince me to that he was ‘one to watch’.

 

Henderson’s reputation flourished and his performance in the 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in November 2010 was worthy of the plaudits it received.

 

A tough England debut followed against France, but his potential was recognised as he was listed by FIFA as a player to watch out for in 2011.

 

A dip in form during the second half of the season has been well documented since Henderson’s move, but it’s worth noting that this dip coincided with a severe injury crisis in Steve Bruce’s squad and Henderson was forced to play a large number of games in a team that lacked a natural striker.

 

Although Henderson returned to goalscoring form at the end of the season, my strongest memory was Henderson’s role in Asamoah Gyan’s goal at Wigan; the move highlighted several of Henderson’s qualities.

 

He started the move, showed intelligent movement to find space, fooled his marker with a trick on the touchline and displayed the end product missing from so many young prospects by floating a perfect cross into the Ghanaian striker’s path.

 

Henderson can play in the middle or on the right, but it’s difficult to guess where he’ll fit in at Liverpool during his first season.

 

Henderson prefers to play in central midfield so -as it stands today- he would be vying for a spot with Meireles, Gerrard, Lucas, Spearing and Shelvey.

 

Things may change during the summer though; Dalglish is chasing Charlie Adam and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Shelvey move on loan to another Premier League side (similar moves have benefitted Jack Wilshere, Tom Cleverley and Daniel Sturridge in recent seasons).

 

Dalglish looks set to have strength in depth in central midfield and it is feasible that either Steven Gerrard or Henderson could play from the right.

 

Raul Meireles has thrived in the free role ahead of the midfield and both England internationals can provide high quality delivery from wide, which will benefit Andy Carroll. (Former Sunderland player Michael Gray is one of a number of pundits to suggest that Henderson’s best position could well be on the flank.)

 

Whatever system Dalglish chooses next season, Henderson will benefit from the quality of player that he will play with.

 

One of his greatest strengths is his passing ability, especially into the channels. With Suarez always keen to pull out to the left wing (and others subsequently finding space), the quick passing game that Dalglish is keen to implement could bring the best out of Henderson.

 

Henderson is technically strong, energetic, focussed and dedicated. He possesses all the qualities that Dalglish and Comolli are looking for in their young signings. There’s much to be excited about, but Henderson must be judged over the long-term.

 

There will be lots of transfer activity at Liverpool this summer as FSG seek to prune the squad and build firm foundations for a successful future.

 

As more established players arrive it’s likely that by the end of the summer Henderson will not be the name on most Liverpool fans’ lips, but it is one that they could be talking about for a very long time.

С тази игра където показа миналия сезон Коул не мисля, че има възможност да се задържи в отбора, а пък да носи №10 на гърба си още по-малко. Също така не е задължително да гоними някой, че да може да дадеме номера на друг играч.

Това последното не го знаех.Мислех,че на когото е даден номера ,негов си е :) Още по-добре тогава тъкмо Коул е пълен провал в първия си сезон и наистина ще е цяло чудо да остане.Но някак си не си го предстявам Air Jordan :sarcastic: с 10ката:д нещо от сорта на 13,16 ми се върти ,не знам защо :)

Гледам в момента мача Испания - Англия за младежи, и за мое огромно съжаление, Джордан Хендерсън нещо ми се губи, но като се има в предвид, че играе на позицията дефанзивен халф (нетипична за него) това си има обяснение до някъде. Отне топката 2-3 пъти, подаде 7-8 паса, но не ми направи особено впечатление. Искам да го видя в по-предни позиции, зад нападателите или по фланга.

Ами не знам дали гледаме същия мач, но като гледам май е единствения който що годе се мъчи да измисли нещо... ама с тея брикети напред са жива трагедия. То и Мата се губи в мача. Мен момчето ми харесва, жалко че другите в отбора му са много зле.

Хендерсън има по-дефанзивна функция тоя мач, макар че го видях да се включи напред вендъж при един пробив на Стъридж. Интересът към една камара от играчите на терена е голям, но това е един мач и само на него не може да се разчита за изводи. То и целият тим на англичаните не изглеждаше кой знае как тая вечер, за да сме разочаровани само от нашия. Естествено, щеше да е яко, ако беше развинтил, ама. това което ми направи впечатление е,че не се страхува да прави по 40+ метра пасове. не му се получиха, но не беше и много далеч от целта.също така имаше 2-3 бързи отигравания с по 1 докосване.определено не показа нещо запомнящо се, но освен Кайл Уокър , всички бяха незапомнящи се.игра доста зряло и дисциплинирано. не се хвърляше постоянно в атаки.като цяло няма как на базата на подобен мач да се направят изводи за момчето все пак.

Те англичаните като цяло почти не пипнаха топката :sarcastic: Хендерсън определено обаче не му е мястото дефанзивен халф, какъвто го беше сложил Психо... Стархливичко влиза в единоборства, но когато е с топка в крака е доста спокоен. Почти не видях грешки в играта му освен 1-2 неточни паса. Даде 3 прекрасни дълги паса с точност до милиметри. Играеше на двойни подавания на няколко пъти доста ефективно. Като цяло ми хареса, но пак казвам мястото му не е като дефанзивен халф... В по-предни позиции обаче си мисля, че ще е животно :) :thumbsup:

Англичаните играха безобразно и не заслужаваха да вземат нищо от този мач,дори трябваше да загубят с разлика. Поведението им беше меко казано обидно,а дежурните извинения с умората,коята най-вероятно ще се изтъкне от Пиърс след мача няма да се възприеме от никого,просто защото разликата в класите беше доста сериозна. Мен лично ме учуди статичността в повечето играчи, и това при положение,че Англия в този набор притежават бързи и остри футболисти,особено по фланговете.

Единствените футболисти,които според мен се представиха на ниво бяха Кайл Уокър ,Дани Уелбек и донякъде двамата централни бранители Смолинг и Джоунс,другите бяха тотални фигуранти.

Хендерсън не игра дефанзивен халф,не знам как някой от вас го възприеха като такъв,Мансиен беше в подобно амплоа,но игра ужасяващо,аз бях учуден защо не започна Родуел,който за мен е много по-качествен играч от него,Фабрис Муамба също,но както и да е. Хендерсън си игра точно в центъра,но беше принуден да се изтегли по назад,заради смазващото предимство на Испания в центъра,така се прекъсна всякаква връзка между него и двамата нападатели отпред. Схемата на Пиърс си беше 4-4-1-1 като Уелбек действаше зад Стъридж,много се разчиташе на атаките по фланговете,но Клевърли и Роуз тотално разочароваха,добре че Уокър внасяше повече острота отдясно,иначе не ги виждахАнглия,то така стана и гола между другото,който си беше от засада.

 

Много интересен талант имат повечето в този форум - изказват се категорично и дават оценки на базата на 1,максимум 2 изгледани мача на даден играч. Ако по някаква случайност въпорсните двубои са слаби на футболиста,който са "оценявали" смятайте,че вече е тотално отписан за футбола и в случая Далглиш така е пръснал милионите. Странни преценки,те хората сигурно ядат доматите с колците.

Хендерсън беше силен при някои контра-атаки... просто с знае къде да застане при корнерите, при центриранията и ми се струва, макар че бе на нетипична за него позиция се справи добре :)

Гледах само първото полувреме.Няма да давам оценки от половин или един мач.Но факта е,че националите на Англия просто не са добри (говоря за мъжете,не за младежите,които днес гледах).

Прехвалени са английските футболисти,то си личи по резултатите на мъжкия отбор на Англия.Докато ПЛ е толква силно най-вече заради чужденците.Та въпроса ми е - трябва ли да купуваме още англичани?Не е ли по-добре да се насочим към други националности.Хубаво,купихме двама млади англичани с потенциал,бая пари се дадоха.Не са ли достатъчни?

Пусни си второто полувреме на мача, Англичаните стояха по-добре :)

Цял сезон Джордан играе като крило, ,много рядко имаше шанс да играе в центъра.А позицията му днес (деф.халф) е доста далеч от това което момчето може, а именно да изгражда атаките и да дава пасове в дълбочина.Но е факт, че един халф трябва да може и да отнема, не сам ода разиграва :)

Не знам каква му е позицията, но е факт че на няколко пъти го разминаха като малка гара и Мата и Тиаго. Има доста да поработи върху играта си в дефанзивен план, ако ще играе по-изтеглен. Според мен ще го ползваме като атакуващ по-скоро.

Правиш го да звучи така, сякаш Мата и Тиаго са издялани от дърво, и никога преди не са правили кривогледи други играч. Аз лично от такива мачове гледам да не си правя изводи. Целия английски отбор беше зле(с малки изключения). Ако не се получава играта на отбора ти, като цяло, трудно може да блеснеш. Да не споменавам мача с Уест Бромич, където Одевинге си ни минаваше по няколко човека, а пък в един друг двубой, уж по - класните съперници(Ман. Сити) нищо не направиха.

Мисълта ми беше да не очакваме от Хендерсън да влиза в ролята на Лукас.
