Player Profile

At sixteen years old Gini Wijnaldum was Feyenoord's youngest ever player when he made his debut for them towards the end of the 2006/07 season. A product of their youth system, he remained there until 2011 when he was transferred to PSV Eindhoven, where he was a consistent performer getting goals and assists from midfield. Only in 2013-14 when Gini regularly was out with a back problem did he fail to reach double figures.

A £14.5 million transfer to Newcastle took place in the summer of 2015 after Wijnaldum had helped PSV to the Eredivisie title. He scored eleven goals from midfield but was unable to prevent Newcastle from being relegated. Two of those goals were against Liverpool in December 2015 and seemed to make a lasting impression on Klopp. Wijnaldum covers a lot of ground, wins possession, is quick, dangerous running from deep into the box and good in the air. Gini was a regular in his first two seasons at Liverpool, although as at Newcastle continued to find the net at home but not away. This was quite possibly down to him adopting a more defensive role in away games. After scoring in Roma in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final in May 2018, Gini finally got a Premiership away goal against Tottenham at Wembley on 15 September 2018.

Despite the arrival of Naby Keita and Fabinho, coupled with James Milner showing no signs of easing up, Wijnaldum featured 35 times in the Premier League during 2018/19. Gini was disappointed to start the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona on the bench but came on in the second half to score twice in as many minutes to level the tie. He started the final against Madrid but was replaced by Milner shortly after the hour mark, but he is a Champions League winners' medal richer.

Wijnaldum was a firm fixture in Liverpool's midfield in the unique 2019/20 season, showered by praise by Klopp in October 2019. “It is just so obvious Gini's importance. It is both directions, small spaces, big spaces, it is hard challenges, fine football, pretty much all of that. Is he the perfect midfielder? From the skillset 100 per cent. He has all the things you need. There was his header against Barcelona too. He is not the tallest, but he is good in the air. He is a good jumper with good timing, all that stuff. It all makes him a pretty good footballer. That is how it should be. It is not my fault if he goes under the radar. You cannot ask me why he goes under the radar. I don’t set the radar!” Klopp concluded.

Kuyt on Wijnaldum

Quote
Georginio Wijnaldum, or ‘Gini’, as we’re likely to refer to him from now on, is expected to finalise his transfer to Liverpool in a matter of hours rather than days – if Sky Sports reports are to be believed.

The Newcastle man will become the seventh Dutchman to represent Liverpool following Sander Westerveld, Eric Meijer, Ryan Babel, Jan Kromkamp, Dirk Kuyt and Boudewijn Zenden, once the £25m signing is announced.

Liverpool’s most successful Dutchman, Kuyt, has had some very nice things to say about the midfielder, too.

“(It is) a wonderful transfer for Gini. The best compliment for him was that his name in my time at Liverpool buzzed inside the club,” he told the Echo.

“He was watched by the scouts already in his youth days at Feyenoord as a very great talent. When I played for Liverpool, I heard them frequently say that he would be a wonderful asset one day.

“He eventually ended up at PSV and Newcastle, before moving to Anfield. He is now at a top club in England and he’ll be at home.”

“Led by Klopp, Liverpool want to go way up again. I myself have been at the semi-finals in the Europa League and then I noticed that something is growing.

“Klopp sees Gini as a nice player. I know him well, he also did well in Brazil.

“He is not only a good player, but also a player with the lungs of a horse.”

If we’d have snared Wijnaldum while he was in Holland he would have arrived far cheaper, but it’s probably beneficial that he’s had a year in England to adapt to the Premier League.

He found out the hard way how difficult our competition can be; relegated with a strong (on paper) Newcastle side, but now he’ll face the demands of a team aiming for the top four.

Technically and physically Wijnaldum has it all, and at 25, he’s entering his peak. It’s now up to him to show Liverpool fans what he can do consistently, as it was his failure to turn up when they needed him most that frustrated Newcastle supporters so much.

What’s certain though is his ability. We think Klopp will get him showing it more regularly

Liverpool Football Club have today completed the signing of Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old has signed a long-term deal with the Reds to seal a return to the Premier League and will now jet out to join the club's ongoing tour of the United States.

After completing a switch to Anfield on Friday, he told Liverpoolfc.com: “I’m really excited because Liverpool is a big club with a great history and it’s always a dream to play for as big a club as Liverpool.”

He also commented on the prospect of working alongside Jürgen Klopp, adding: “[He seems] a great man - from the outside - because I don’t know how he works yet and I have to work with him.

“[but] I always love to watch him, his passion as a trainer, I like how he enjoys the game. He gives something back to the group [with his passion] so I look forward to working with him.”

Wijnaldum scored 11 goals in 38 league appearances in his maiden season in England following a move from PSV Eindhoven last summer.

The Dutchman, who also previously represented Feyenoord, has 30 international caps to his name.

He joins Loris Karius, Joel Matip, Marko Grujic, Sadio Mane, Ragnar Klavan and Alex Manninger as a fresh face in Klopp's squad ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

“I think he can be a great player for us. He has already shown some really good moments in his career but the most exciting and important thing for me and my staff is that there is still so much extra to come from him.

“When I talked to him I could tell that he knows we have to work together to get this level out of him to all be successful for the team.

“He has played a lot for his country already, been captain at a young age in Holland and also been involved in a tough Premier League season so this experience gives him a good foundation for the challenge here - which everybody knows is huge!

“He can play a few positions for us and players that come through the Dutch system usually have a good tactical understanding and flexibility. That's really important.

“I can't wait to get him on the training pitch and for the fans" to see him play in a Liverpool shirt.

Asked Klopp where he sees Wijnaldum playing. He said he could be one of the 3 or the 2 in 4-2-3-1 or either side in 4-3-3. Versatile. #LFC

“He can also play either side in a 4-3-3. He can play in five or six different positions. That’s one of the things I really like about him."

Gini Wijnaldum has revealed that it was the Jurgen Klopp factor which convinced him to snub Tottenham and Everton before completing a £25million move to Liverpool.

The Dutch international was a man in demand this summer after suffering relegation from the Premier League with Newcastle United.

Spurs offered Champions League football and fellow countryman Ronald Koeman wanted him at Goodison, but a meeting with the Reds boss convinced the attacking midfielder that Anfield was the right destination for him.

Their discussion ended with Wijnaldum enthused about the prospect of being part of the Reds' bright future under Klopp.
